391 holes
2008
91 holes drilled into 5mm steel plate, ground & finished in acrylic lacquer
1300mm x 900mm
As with my Random Imprints sculpture, this piece began life as a sheet of reclaimed steel I discovered in my workshop.
The buckled and twisted section of 5mm steel plate has 391 holes drilled into it. Each one is identical in size but varies slightly in position.

I ground back one side to expose the original steel and create a textured, light-catching surface which was then coated to prevent the rust returning.
The metal plate was then wall-mounted using yacht rigging and carefully lit to capture the sheen of the new metal and cast shadow.

It reminds me of a collection of pixels, which up close can be viewed individually but step back and they resolve themselves into patterns and groupings.
